Why is a Snapdragon Called a Snapdragon?

I’ve always loved snapdragons. There really aren’t many flowers one can play with. Loves me, loves me not with daisies. Popping rose petals. Trying to blow ALL of the seeds off of a dandelion with one breath. But those are all one shot per flower. With snapdragons, you can make them snap, snap, snap over and again so long as you’re gentle with them (life lesson: don’t overuse the things/people you love). I found these on my walk yesterday. I’ve been playing with gardens for forty years and they’re still as much fun to snap as the first time.
